As the holidays approach, so do our tendency to question our sanity as we look over our calendar and realise that there is hardly time to sleep, let alone keep the holiday spirit alive while floating from one festivity to the next. This week I am sharing my 10 top tips for stress free holiday entertaining (read part 1 here), because try as we might, we all reach that point where we put on an Oscar worthy tantrum in the kitchen (or maybe that is jut me?).
Tips 6-10 for a stress free holiday season:
Fill up your bar: Keep the party going with a fully stocked bar. Replace those seldom used, dusty bottles with new ones–they have a long shelf life, but trust me…serving up a year old, half drunk bottle of brandy will give your cocktail the antique effect that your guests won’t appreciate. Stock the bar with light and dark beer varieties, mixers, garnish, and especially the essentials for the signature cocktail you are serving. Make friends with your florist, greengrocer, butcher, baker and candlestick maker: One of the smartest things I have ever done is befriend my greengrocer, and if you have not met yours, start saying hello this weekend. Kindness does take you further, after all, have you ever noticed the cranky customer being given the choice cut of beef at the counter? I think not darlings….
Book your guest room: House guests and the holidays go hand in hand, both the planned for and the unexpected variety. Treat your guest room like a small bed and breakfast and your guests will delight in your hospitality. When the guest room is booked, and you find your self hosting a guest on your sofa, having plenty of spare toothbrushes, ear plugs and blankets on hand will go a long way to creating a tiny haven in your living room. Know your local Cabby: Don’t let a good night turn sour by searching for a cab company at the last minute. Inform your cab company that you are having a party and they are likely to give you a discount, and have drivers on hand for a fabulous send off.
Take Note: What would an entertaining season be without a well loved entertaining journal? If you love record keeping, journal writing and lists…..you will swoon over my tips on creating an entertaining journal.
